Yesterday, Gaborone mayor, Kagiso Thutlwe announced that the City Council has tied another critical deal with Jack’s Gym.  He said the sponsorship is important, as it would attract more people to register for the marathon, since they would be assisted well with the preparations.

“The sponsorship only covers registered athletes, assisting them with preparation, advice, information and distribution for the marathon.  Participants would be offered services at Jack’s Gym for free for the period of a month,” Thutlwe said.  He called on all Batswana to come forward and support the marathon to enable the city to host a successful event. He added that they have been selling tickets and all the malls in Gaborone have a marathon stand as a way of raising awareness and attracting participants. “The preparations are ongoing because our intention is to host a successful event. We have employed young people who did not have jobs and our intention is to provide sustainable employment for them through this initiative,” he said.

Jack’s Gym director, Jagdish Shah said they are ready to host the Gaborone Mayor’s marathon participants in order to assist them through the preparations.  He said as a health and fitness company, they have found it important to be part of the initiative.

“We have good trainers that would be assisting the runners with guidance on how to run a particular race and they would use the best facilities to prepare the physical aspects of the athletes,” Shah said.  He urged runners to register early so that they benefit from the sponsorship saying their services are readily available to the participants.

Meanwhile, the marathon is targeting 10,000 participants from Zimbabwe, Zambia, and South Africa amongst others.  The winner of the main event will pocket P50,000 and tickets are already on sale at all Choppies and Liqourama stores.
