Chillie from Mogoditshane was, after the first round, tied on points with the young man they like to call the ‘Lionel Messie of Pantsula’, Thabiso Ramogale popularly known as ‘Discovery’ in the streets of Old Naledi.

It was a grand battle of Pantsula generations because Chillie at 49-years-old, is almost twice the age of Discovery at 26-years-old.

But the ‘grootman’ was in it to win it.  And he did. Chillie’s style of dance that he says has been winning him pantsula dance competitions since the 1980s, is totally different from Discovery’s rather neat style. This is because Chillie uses lots of props, like the walking stick, hula-hoop, okapi knife and even a chair, to bedazzle the audience.

He started like an old time tsotsi scratching his Okapi menacingly on the hall’s stage floor, producing sparks while his All Star converse was moving like he was suspended on air.

He wiggled his butt while the hula-hoop twirled around his waist and the Brentwood trousers shook like they were controlled by an electric current. The crowd went mad.

Discovery’s style does not use many props like Bra Chillie, but the young man works wonders with his steps. He produces coordinated neat moves that are a marvel to watch. But as he gets deeper into a dance, one could discover that his props are actually there, but invincible.  Watching him is like watching a talented football wizard working magic on the orb, and that is why they have named him after the Argentine star, Lionel Messi.

At the end, the judges decided that Chillie was just too hot for Discovery and he was crowned the champion. Discovery came in second while Dirang ‘Poiden’ Sebogo from Ramotswa took position three.

Speaking to The Monitor, Chillie was ecstatic bragging about his victory. He said, “I have been winning this for many years. I just wanted to show these boys that I am a legend”.
