They were scheduled to play the return leg at the weekend. The decision comes after the BFA cast doubts over the senior women team’s participation at this year’s edition of the COSAFA Women Senior Challenge. “We would not honour the return leg.

We looked at our financial situation and decided that it would not be wise to play the return leg. Our team has young players, we want to nurture their talent and build a stronger team for the future,” BFA communications and marketing manager, Tumo Mpatane told Monitor Sport yesterday.

He was, however, quick to refute suggestions that the massive defeat against the Kenyans had an impact on the decision taken. “Not at all, the junior teams dig deep in our coffers. We have to spend around P1-million per trip. Financially, we are not in a position to spend more,” he said.

Looking at the previous scenarios, the BFA is likely to be fined the sum of around P50,000 or face suspension for the next World Cup. Mpatane said he was aware of the possible charges, but said the association’s hands were ‘tied’. “Our hands were tied, that was the last option we had.

It was not an option that we could have taken on a regular basis. But we had to look at our financial situation. We would like to send our apologies to the whole nation,” Mpatane said.
