Habitual rapist remanded in custody

Detective constable, Veronica Molapo pleaded with Broadhurst Magistrate Gaseitsewe Tonoki not to grant Moloi bail, who is facing three counts of rape, fearing that he might commit more similar offences.

“Moloi is suspected to have committed rape in March and yet again in April on two different people and just that he is alleged to have committed the offences in a space of a month.

I fear that if granted bail, he might continue committing more offences.

Please save the society from him.

Not granting him bail will also save him from committing more offences,” Molapo said. She also told the court that Moloi is a flight risk who might abscond like he did in the past.

She said back in 2015, when the accused was facing an indecent assault case, he evaded the police for almost a year.

Molapo said the accused is in a habit of repeating similar offences of rape and was only arrested two weeks ago, for the offence he committed in April this year.

She said the 2014 offence was withdrawn, but with the possibility of being reinstated because the IO then failed to take the sexual assault kit to the forensic laboratory, but she has since discovered them and will be taking them for further testing.

Asked if he has anything to say Moloi asked if it was allowed for prosecution to drag the 2014 matter into the current matters.

He also pleaded with court to give him the opportunity to go and apply for bail at the High Court.

“In whose authority do you drag the 2014 matter into the current matters. I did not flee to Masunga village as the prosecution claims.

I handed myself to the Masunga police after they phoned me,” Moloi said.

In response, Molapo told the court that the 2014 case was withdrawn with the possibility of being reinstated and the law allows her to reinstate the matter if there is any evidence.

The IO stated that Moloi is facing three counts of rape involving three different victims, hence if granted bail, there is a high possibility of him committing more rape offences.

He (Moloi) is facing three counts of rape he is alleged to have committed back on March 25, 2014, the second one on March 12, 2017 and the other one in April 16, 2017, all committed at Ledumang location in Gaborone.

Moloi was further remanded in custody and is due in court on December 11.
