Omitted Kapeko still eyeing national team return

Kapeko is the longest serving national team player having played for the country for 23 years, 21 as the captain. The national team travelled to Mozambique for the World Cup qualifiers. When asked about his surprise exclusion from the national team, Kapeko said he had not received any communication from the coaches or the office.

The Omaweneno born star said he was sidelined without any conversation or approach as to what their focus is.

“I think it is the coaches who can be in a better position to answer as to why they have now decided to carry on without me. I cannot say it on their behalf.

You know I have represented the country for so many years with different generations and obviously one feels good to have gone that far, but it depends on how that relationship ends, but if one feels they no longer need your input you just give them space they need,” he said.

Kapeko said he is happy that the team is still doing well in his absence. He added that it was pleasing to see the inclusion of young players, some of whom are his products.

Despite being sidelined, the 40-year-old Kapeko said he is willing to represent his country if selected in the future. “This is my country, I have not done anything wrong to anyone. As long as I still play and remain fit I will represent my country,” he said.

He said this is the only exclusion from the national team since 1994. He further said he last played for the national team in 2015 at Congo African Games, the last game the national team played before the recent World Cup qualifiers in Mozambique. Kapeko said going forward, senior players or experienced players should be retained to help in the growth of the sport. He said recognition of former players is something all sports associations should consider.

Kapeko started playing volleyball in 1992, moving from softball to join Kutlwano, which he served until now.

He captained the national Under-20 team for three years and then moved to the senior team. He said when he retires, he plans on taking up a coaching role, as he possesses coaching qualifications.
