She complained about the number of illegal immigrants during the NEDC special full council meeting, which was held recently in Masunga. According to Mpetsane, the number of illegal immigrants in their area is worrisome in the sense that they have managed to apprehend 2,112 people in the last five months.

She said the issue is so disturbing as the majority of citizens continue to break the law by hiding illegal immigrants in their yards.

Mpetsane said Batswana in their district have a tendency of helping illegal immigrants to evade the law so that they can use them as domestic workers.

She said there is clear evidence that Batswana continue to employ non-citizens for domestic work.

The NEDC chairperson said the law enforcement clean-up campaigns, raids and the continued stop-question-search strategy employed by the police have yielded results.

“In that regard, the festive holidays are approaching and the department has committed itself to working tirelessly to reduce the number of accidents and illegal immigrants in the district,” she said.

She added that the police will continue their efforts of night patrols, trekking teams, ambushes and task force teams just to mention but a few.

Meanwhile, the NEDC chairperson raised another issue on road safety precautions.

She said generally, citizens still drive for the police, and not for their own safety. Mpetsane said there are indications of recklessness on the roads combined with the use of drinking alcohol whilst driving motor vehicles.

She disclosed that a total of 1,731 traffic violations ranging from overspeeding, drunken driving, unlicensed drivers, failure to obey road signs were encountered in this period. She said the unit continues to enhance visibility through patrols and sporadic roadblocks on the Sebina-Masunga and Masunga-Ramokgwebana roads and on the A1 highway from Ramokgwebana to Francistown. She said a total of four people lost their lives due to road traffic accidents during this reporting period.
