Shunning meetings: GU have twice failed to hold its AGM

The Reds have failed to hold their annual general meeting (AGM) twice this year, as members did not form a quorum.

After the postponements, the GU executive committee will on Monday meet to decide the date for the final meeting. The meeting was initially billed for October, but was postponed for last Saturday where only a handful of members showed up.

Speaking to Mmegi Sport yesterday, GU secretary general, Gofhamodimo ‘City’ Senne said the meeting would not need members to form a quorum as per the club’s constitution and it would be the GU members’ last chance to get an update of the past year from the committee.

“This would be last chance for us to constitutionally hold such a meeting this year. The constitution entails that the meeting would not necessarily need to have the two thirds of the members, any number of attendants on the day would allow us to proceed with the meeting,” he said.

In a rare occurrence where the executive committee is not to be blamed for the failure of the meeting, Senne said the supporters cannot be blamed as there are at times engaged through personal and work commitments.

“This is an issue that has been there since I was a player here at GU. Our supporters do not attend these meetings in large numbers.

It has always been like this, they are not really sensitive to the constitution but we cannot blame them; some come from far. Last year, the meeting was a success since we held it in Palapye.

This an update about the team for the past season, not only the senior team but also the junior and women’s teams also. It will not be an elective meeting,” Senne said.

The postponements present a glorious chance for embattled chairperson, Rapula Okaile to stay on, as the opposing group would need the numbers to topple the current committee.

Okaile has been at loggerheads with a faction of supporters since assuming power in 2015.  The fight over the control of the club has landed in court as a group led by Molatedi Diole challenges Okaile’s legitimacy. The disgruntled group is said to be planning a motion of no confidence against Okaile and his committee.
