Speaking at a press briefing yesterday in Gaborone, Mayor Kagiso Thutwe said the city council has partnered with Choppies who have come in as a Gold Sponsor with the value of P500,000. He said the money would cover the prize money and key operational processes.

Thutwe also said despite Gaborone being one of the fastest growing cities in Africa and the world, the recent financial crisis has slowed development, which has immensely contributed to the social and economic problems that the citizens of the city have succumbed to. He said the Gaborone City Council had to come up with morale boosting activities for the residents.

“The city has come up with an initiative to host an annual marathon with a view to energise the residents in areas such as health and wellness, tourism boost, employment, infrastructure development, technology development and advancement and unity of the people,” Thutwe said.

He further said the event would be used for the development of the city as all proceeds from the marathon would be used to improve the lives of the people. Thutwe also announced that they have targeted 10,000 participants for the event and are expecting participation of athletes from Zimbabwe, Zambia and South Africa amongst others.

The event would be divided into the 5km, 10km and the 42km races. The winner of the main event will pocket P50,000 and the tickets and application forms for the marathon are already on sale at all Choppies and Liqourama stores.

Since assuming office in 2015, Thutwe has held a number of activities for the people of the city. He recently hosted the inaugural Mayor’s Cup football tournament that was won by newly promoted Sharps Shooting Stars over the weekend.
