The national ball sport contests from football, table tennis, netball, softball, volleyball, and basketball amongst others started on Friday in the group stages.  The following day, the teams faced off in the semi finals before the exciting finals took place on Sunday. BISA president, Joshua Gaotlhobogwe said they are happy with the level of competition they saw on the field. He said the association is surely achieving its objective, which is to give the students an opportunity to compete at the national level.

“The kind of growth we have observed from these games is an outstanding one. All participants strive for medals, which makes the competitions tough and interesting. This year we are on the fourth year of the project that we have started. Therefore, I would like to thank Copa Coca-Cola Company for their support in ensuring that kids are encouraged to participate in sports,” Gaotlhobogwe said.

He said they believe that the competition would go a long way in developing sports particularly football from the grassroots that would raise future athletes. “Initially, the Botswana Copa Coca-Cola was to only sponsor the under 15 athletes,” he said.  “However, they have extended their sponsorship to senior schools with the merchandise during their games this week.”

He added that the company assistance encourages more kids to take part in sport at school level, which would assist them to build their profiles especially those who are able to reach the nationals. Meanwhile, Gaotlhobogwe revealed that some of the students were part of the national Under-17 football side that is in Mauritius for the COSAFA games.

“We are now preparing for the COSASA games to be held in Lesotho in August. Our technical team has been selecting athletes that would form the national team at the games. The association will host the senior schools nationals during the week.”
