Jomo Punishes Chiefs In Mayor�s Cup

The two sides had set up their first meeting by beating Tafic and Extension Gunners respectively to reach the final played on Saturday evening at the National Stadium.
Newly-promoted Sharps shot into the final after downing Gunners 3-0 while Chiefs beat Tafic 2-0 in a semi-final played earlier that day. In the final encounter, it took more than ten minutes for one of the sides to orchestrate an attacking play.
Sharps were the first to pose threat as on the 11th minute after Langa Mabuli got the better of Katlego Koobake on the right wing and put in a good cross that was missed by his teammates. Both teams settled well in the game as the half went on and looked threatening whenever in possession.
On the 25th minute, Monageng Thaele showed great skill to outwit Rebaone Modisaotsile, before he found Moatlhaping with a pin point cross and headed home to give Sharps the lead. Sharps’ attack remained the most promising for most of the half before Thato Ogopotse missed two glorious chances in the last three minutes of the half.
His first attempt was blocked off the line with keeper left wanting in the 43rd minute while he headed a corner over the bar in his second attempt a minute later. Sharps took a one-goal lead into the break.
Sharps doubled the lead on the hour mark, after Mabuli found substitute Tshepo Malgase with a defence splitting pass from the right. The attacker beat a defender but could only shoot into the keeper’s hands inside the box. Five minutes later, Chiefs’ Tendai Nyamadzawo headed over the bar from a free kick as Magosi continued the search for an equaliser. In the 83rd minute, Sharps broke away with pace, before Letlhogonolo Chenjela was denied by advancing Kenalemang Neo on a one on one situation. With two minutes to regulation time, Moatlhaping got to the end of a loose ball from a free kick to give his side a two goal cushion in what was the last action of the game.
Sharps’ coach, Keitumetse ‘Pio’ Paul was happy to win the tournament but said his team was not up to the standard of competing in the elite league yet.
“We are still in the pre-season. We have been doing a lot of running. In the next weeks, we would be working on tactics. I still need a couple of experienced players to beef up the team,” he said. His opposite number, Chiefs’ assistant coach Innocent Morapedi said his team fielded a number of trialists whom have impressed. He said despite the loss, the technical team has been impressed with the performance of the players.
