‘The night of the stars’ was pushed to August, but the event might be postponed again to September.

BNSC chairperson, Solly Reikeletseng told Mmegi Sport yesterday that the awards had to be postponed because the country was hosting the netball world cup and it was important for the global tournament to get all the attention.

He said the same personnel who assists in putting together the awards were involved in the organising of the netball tournament.

“We did not want to interfere with a world event. We had to make sure that the event proceeds well with no hiccups.

But now, we have a team that will be participating at the IAAF London 2017 World Championships in August,” he said.

Reikeletseng said the World Championships might force the BNSC to push the awards further to September.

Meanwhile, Reikeletseng said in 2016 there was the challenge posed by preparations for the BOT50 independence celebrations. He said the celebrations were held in stadia, which meant sporting activities were affected.

Despite that, Reikeletseng said there are some individuals who stood out and did well in international competitions.

He gave an example of football, saying the BTC Premiership ended with no challenges.

“We saw the return of Amantle Montsho after serving her suspension. Since her return, she has been doing well. Our athletics team also excelled,” Reikeletseng said.

He said some local administrators have been appointed into international committees, which is an indication that globally, Botswana is recognised. He said in retrospect, the past year has been good for sports.
