Womens football to make Goledzwa tournament debut

The Goledzwa tournament will be held in Tutume in the North East District.

Tournament publicity secretary, Christopher Nyanga told Mmegi Sport this week that the women’s competition would be between a team from Tutume and another from Matobo village, which is 20 kilometres from Tutume.  He said the game would be played on December 28, 2017. He said the idea is part of a strategy to support women’s football in the village. He stated that they are hopeful football fans would be excited to see such changes.

Meanwhile, Nyanga said there will be seven men’s teams, up from last year’s six. The tournament has been running in Tutume every festive season since 2009.

The Goledzwa tournament has seen rapid growth and is a household competition in the area. The tournament has teams from all wards in Tutume. The teams are Bashe Rollers, Mangaungau, Madumilano, Happy Hearts, Gulana, Tjadabae and Kwabangalala.

The winner of the tournament walks away with P16,000. The final for the Goledzwa tournament is on January 1, 2018.

“Our strategy is to have eight teams because Tutume is a big village. We want to represent the village fully. We want to include another ward in the competition after assessment,” he said.

The draw for the tournament will be conducted in Gaborone today. Nyanga said they expect sponsors and Botswana Football Association (BFA) officials to attend the draw.

The tournament kicks-off on December 24 with Ms Goledzwa Beauty Pageant, always attracting multitudes of Tutume residents.

Furthermore, Nyanga said they will honour Isaac Makwala for his prominent role in athletics.

“The Goledzwa tournament would join hands with the other tournaments in Tutume and surrounding areas. The tournaments would bring their best teams to take part in the games.

The games are slated for December 30. The Makwala challenge tournament proceeds would go towards charity and 30% goes to Makwala,” Nyanga said. Some of the sponsors are Dupa Enterprises Corporation, Air Cooling and Maintenance Pty Ltd, Ketan Enterprises Corporation and Ndadi Law Firm.
