Traditional song and dance competitions mesmerises audience

The theme for this year’s President Day Celebrations was ‘Creative Industries: A Vehicle for Sustainable Development’, something that Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Sports and Culture Development deputy permanent secretary, Mogomotsi Kaboeamodimo highlighted in his remarks.

There were ten categories of traditional song and dance, with each category comprising of four groups. The groups were from different parts of the country and they were showcasing their different cultures. All the groups performed exceptionally well and presented their performances with great energy, passion and creativity.

In the Diware song and dance category Mathiachicho emerged the winners with 78%, in position two was Kamberera with 76%, in third Thwayaza with 75% and in fourth Mwayiyovora with 70%. Seperu dance had two categories, being Chobe District Seperu dance, and North-West Seperu dance. For the Seperu originating in the Chobe District, Chaakonchako emerged the winners with 80%, Mbalakalungu came second with 78%, Itenge was in third with 77% and in fourth was Zwakaba with 75%. For Seperu, which originates in the North-West part of Botswana, Shigyakao emerged the winners with 90%, Mavuashire got second position with 83% and Diyathoteng third with 80% while Tiwazini was fourth with 76%.

In Hosana category, Tjilenje Tje Ngwao scooped first position with 82%, Ngwao Letshwao got second with 80%, Mabutswapele was third with 78% and in fourth was Khombelani with 74%.  In the Sebirwa category, Re Tla Re Ke Dipitse were the winners with 84%, in second position was Moseka Phofu with 84%, in third was Ba Ga Mmanaana with 80% and in fourth Babirwa Cultural Group with 78%. In Tsutsube category Kgabosetso emerged the winners with 94%, Kuruaboo was second with 92%, Molelo Wa Badimo was third with 90% and Teemane came in fourth with 86%. For the Setapa category, Matsosangwao emerged the winners with 93%, Khuduthamaga was second with 90%, and Ngwao Le Metlha third with 88% whilst Ishiqwapwa came fourth with 65%.

The competition continued and for the Phathisi category, Kala Tsa Kgale won with 90%, Bana Ba Kwena was second with 89%, Tse Tilodi came third with 79% and Bajakhudu was fourth with 70%. In the Dikwaere category, Dintoronkong emerged victorious with 92%, Mahusane Choir came second with 89%, Fire Choir was third with 87% and in fourth was Ntsu ya Dikaka with 85%. For the last category being Polka, Kalahari Dancers emerged the winners with 92%, Survivors got second with 88%, Trek e’ Ding was third with 85% and fourth position went to Gareng Ga Dithota with 80%.

Representing the adjudicators, Pogiso Pule highlighted that the competitors gave an outstanding performance. “When selecting the winners, we focused on the general appearance of the performance, coordination, the dance format and the involvement of props. We also looked at the choice of the song, the message it gives and if the song and dance rhythm blends accordingly,” he said.
