BOSETU Goes To Elective Congress

This year’s congress of delegates will be held under the theme, “ BOSETU: Championing Educators’ Rights in the midst of Collective Bargaining Challenges in Botswana.” The delegate congress will be held in Palapye at Majestic 5 Hotel.

Delegates to the congress are expected to arrive on August 24. The congress would then commence on August 25 with the official opening expected to be performed by the Minister responsible for the public service, Eric Molale.

An invitation has been extended to him to perform the function but he has not yet replied. His attendance will offer him a rare opportunity to address a trade union for teachers on his envisaged vision on the public service of which teachers are part.

The Assistant General Secretary at National Union of Teachers in the United Kingdom responsible for Advice, Policy and Campaigns, Comrade Amanda Brown would address the Congress of Delegates rendering a keynote address.

Comrade Brown has at the recent International Labour Conference, been elected to sit on the International Labour Organisation governing body as the UK workers’ representative.

The Ministers of Basic and Tertiary education ministries, Unity Dow and Alfred Madigele will address the congress on the respective Basic Education and Tertiary Education reforms towards 2020 respectively.

Their permanent secretaries will present on the conditions of service for teachers and tertiary lecturers and instructors.

Congress business will proceed on August 6 during which it will deal with internal matters including amongst others, the Presidential overview `of the status of the union for the period under review, the Executive report by the Secretary General, presentation of audited financials of the union and presentation of motions and consequent resolutions by congress.

August 27 will be reserved for the election of the new leadership to run the union for the next three years.
