Expelled BDP councillor to appeal

Moreti and Thamalakane ward councillor Duncan Enga’s were expelled for defying a party caucus by contesting the council leadership positions, contrary to article 32.3 of the BDP constitution. Decisions of a BDP caucus are binding by nature. Any act of defiance towards the decisions of a party caucus attracts suspension or expulsion. 

“I have been consulting the electorates in my ward and the general feeling is that I should appeal the party’s decision to expel me,” Moreti said.  He said that he started consultations with his electorates last week Saturday. “I have probably consulted 60% of the electorates.

I will conclude consultations this week. I will certainly appeal sometimes next week because I have to listen to the people. If at all they change their stance and offer other alternatives I will not appeal,” he said.  He added that some opposition parties have approached him with a view of recruiting him.

“It is still early for me to think of joining any political party,” he said. Enga was not available for comment yesterday as his phone rang unanswered for the better part of the day. However, indications are that he is also pondering on launching an appeal to the party. He is also said to be consulting his ward members. 

Enga went against a party caucus and challenged Reaboka Mbulawa for the North West District Council (NWDC) chairpersonship where he subsequently won. Moreti contested for the position of deputy chairperson at the Maun Administrative Authority (MAA), a subordinate council to NWDC. For the MAA position a BDP caucus had endorsed Nico Folae. 

The pair labelled their expulsion ‘harsh and unfair’. During a recent press conference Enga pointed out that while the judgement and their sentence was premised on article 32.3 of the party constitution it ignored other factors that contributed to their decision to defy the party caucus.

They accused their BDP opponents of using underhand tactics to win the elections. “Mbulawa engaged in unfair campaigns before the caucus.  I made complaints to the BDP regional structures to no avail,” Enga told a press conference recently.
