Police ready to send double murder docket to DPP

Yesterday, prosecutor, Inspector Oamogetswe Gaboutlwelwe of Botswana Police Service told magistrate Gaseitsewe Tonoki that they are still awaiting results from the forensic laboratory before handing over the docket to DPP for assessment of evidence.

“I have received information from the investigating officer that they are still awaiting the results from the forensic laboratory on the exhibits we sent there. As soon as we get them, we will record the statements and send the docket to DPP for assessment,” she said.

She said they have received post-mortem results only, but are awaiting a different set of results in relation to blood samples and some exhibits sent to the forensic lab for analysis.

The court heard that on Independence Day, Phadisa murdered Bembe Magosi and Gomolemo Motladile at Phiring location in Broadhurst by stabbing them to death with a knife.

It is alleged that Phadisa was in a love relationship with Motladile but brutally killed her and her mother following a misunderstanding with them.

Gaboutlwelwe, who was holding the fort for Inspector Onkemetse Modukanele, pleaded with the court to further remand the accused in custody.

This, after the accused demanded bail and asked the prosecutor to explain what she meant when she said he is not a bail candidate because in the previous mention she said he is a flight risk.

He asked the prosecution to furnish the court with a record of possible destinations he has travelled to outside the country.

“I indicated that the accused might be enticed to run away because he is facing serious charges of murder. The gravity of the offence might entice him to run away,” she explained.

However, Tonoki agreed with the prosecution that the accused is facing serious charges of murder, which on its own could entice him to abscond from court. The accused has been ordered to return to court on December 21.
