Debswana engineer drowns in swimming pool

The man, who worked as an engineer at the mine, met his untimely death when he was swimming with his friends while enjoying their afternoon drinks.

“He drowned at around 4pm,” Superintendent Michael Maphephu of Letlhakane Police Station told Mmegi yesterday.

He added: “This is the third drowning incident at the same swimming pool and we will engage the management to establish how best incidents of this nature can be avoided”.

Maphephu also appealed to revellers in Letlhakane to be vigilant of rapists, especially at this time of the year as partying has become the order of the day.

He said in the past two weeks, they have recorded seven cases of rape in Letlhakane and most of the suspects have not been arrested.

“Most of these rape cases are committed when people return from drinking sprees or parties late at night. We plead with members of the community to be cautious at night,” he said.

Meanwhile, the police in Palapye are investigating a case in which a middle-aged man was attacked and stabbed to death by two assailants over the weekend.

This is the second murder incident to take place at the same drinking spot in Palapye within a space of a month. In the initial incident, a 48-year-old man was stabbed to death by a group of young men aged between 20 and 25 years following a misunderstanding at Makgabana bar.

Superintendent Waboraro Ramaja confirmed the latest murder incident in an interview yesterday. He said the deceased met his fate on Saturday around 10pm at the bar located in Extension One location.

He added that investigations are still on going to establish what led to the murder.

“From the preliminary investigations we established that the two accused persons appeared from nowhere and stabbed the deceased who was at the bar without any argument,” he said.

The alleged culprits aged 25 and 27 years respectively were arrested on Sunday at Extension 8 and they are expected to appear before the magistrate court today. The accused persons and the deceased are all from Palapye.

Ramaja expressed worry about growing levels of violence amongst the youth in Palapye, particularly at drinking spots. He indicated that sharp instruments have become a turn-to weapon to the youth during misunderstandings.
