Masisi, who is also the country’s Vice-President, was re-elected the party’s chairperson, brushing aside a challenge from Infrastructure and Housing Development Minister, Nonofo Molefhi. Addressing a mini-press conference outside the polling marquee tent immediately after his victory over the weekend, a visibly elated Masisi said he would join forces with Molefhi to ensure the BDP grinds the opposition to the ground in the 2019 general elections.

“We are ready as democrats to wage war against the opposition and beat them thoroughly,” Masisi said, adding that with Molefhi fighting alongside, the party would be stronger and would fire salvos on the opposition. Masisi said the numbers in his election alone, showed the BDP was behind his guidance in pushing for victory in 2019.

Masisi garnered 769 votes against Molefhi’s 261. “We are in a transition stage as the BDP and the country. I occupy the second position in the party and I expect to occupy the first position of the party and government next year. “This is all about political power.

I yearned to retain the same amount of power as I prepare to assume more. The other reason is that on itself that (the victory) communicates to everybody our readiness and (my) level of acceptance by our members. This galvanises and readies our members for the political battle,” he said.

Masisi said he and Molefhi had congratulated each other for a race well run. “I do acknowledge that some voted for my colleague Minister Molefhi. He and I met and congratulated one another. We again expressed mutual admiration about how we conducted ourselves because we are members of the same team called the BDP.”
