Axe hovers over Kebonang�s head

Khama is said to be contemplating firing Kebonang after it emerged that he benefitted about P15 million from flamboyant businessman Bakang Seretse’s commission.

Seretse is facing money-laundering charges together with Botho Leburu and Kenneth Kerekang.

The trio was granted bail by the Gaborone Regional Magistrate last week Friday. The case involves millions of pula from the National Petroleum Fund (NPF). It has since emerged that the youthful minister sold three houses to Seretse for P15 million in cash.

“Kebonang is skating on thin ice. He is now in trouble with Khama. This is a clear case of conflict of interest,” a source close to power told Mmegi. It is also said that two houses are in Johannesburg, South Africa and one is in Gaborone.

Apparently, this transaction was brought to the attention of Khama who foamed over the deals between an accused person and his minister. Mmegi has learnt that on Wednesday Khama informed his Executive that he has instituted an investigation on NPF saga.

A few months ago, Khama instructed the Directorate on Corruption and Economic Crime (DCEC) and Financial Intelligence Agency to carry out this investigation.

“When the two agencies told him that the issues are much deeper, he instructed them to unravel everything. This entails investigating the whole works, entire money trail and corrupt activities,” the deep throat said. It is also alleged that Botswana Unified Revenue Service has no record of sale and tax paid on it.

“The taxman wants his money.” Permanent Secretary to the President, Carter Morupisi said he had no idea since he was outside the country. Morupisi is also a Cabinet secretary.
