They came out to play with their loved ones at the Gaborone Main Mall on Saturday for the inaugural Heart of the City Carnival.

The newly paved Main Mall walkway stretching from the city arch to the British High Commission building proved to be a great location for a cool parade. The walkway was barricaded and then divided into three parts.

There was a food court located at the BOT50 tusk monument square with various local chefs selling diverse cuisines.

In front of the National Development Bank and Zambian Embassy buildings was the craft market where a fashion show was also hosted.

At the big Main Mall square between the President Hotel and Ministry of Lands and Housing building was the festival’s main stage.

All the performances were live and included South African crossover groups, Freshly Ground and Mango Groove.  Their acts turned up the fun and the carnival mood amplified.

Sereetsi and The Natives of Robete fame also came through and rocked his four-string guitar and ‘the natives’ sang along.

The amazing Mophato Dance Theatre who has redefined ‘contemporary dance’ once again proved that Botswana is ready to export the arts. Their dance left many carnival attendants begging for more.

During the day, the carnival parade passed through the city centre with various traditional groups doing Setswana dances like borankana, setapa, phathisi, seperu, and polka.

The Heart of the City carnival was organised by the Botswana Tourism Organisation.
