Council to implement special economic zones sites next year

The town has been declared one of the eight special economic zones.
Speaking during the Mayor’s ball recently, Mayor, Molosiwa Molosiwa said they have already consulted and submitted the council’s preferred areas for the implementation of this initiative to the Special Economic Zones Authority.
“This coupled, with the special incentive packages designed for Selebi-Phikwe, has aroused a lot of interest from potential investors both locally and internationally,” he said.
Molosiwa added that next year will be a very busy year for his town and pleaded with those who want to relocate from the town to seriously reconsider lest they would miss out on a lot of opportunities. Last year the council suspended the Mayor’s ball in tribute to the tragedy of the mine closure. Molosiwa said the annual event was revived this year to accord stakeholders an opportunity to interact and reflect on their efforts to revive the town’s economy a year after the sudden closure of the BCL Mine. He was happy that despite the tragedy that befell the town, stakeholders came together to refocus their energies and resources towards a common goal of revitalising the town’s economy.
He particularly saluted SPEDU, Business Botswana, Selebi-Phikwe Chamber of Commerce, and the business community at large for their unwavering support for the town.
“As council, we have also established a very close working relationship with SPEDU, which culminated in the signing of a memorandum of understanding with the intention to foster rapid revitalisation programme for the town.
This relation is necessary to bring the best for this town,” he said.
He stressed that stakeholders have become a source of encouragement for all and continued to explore different avenues that could foster the revival of the economy.
