The man, together with friends, were alleged to have been drinking alcohol near the dam that Sunday morning before the deceased drowned. Mochudi Station commander, Superintendent Otsile Fane confirmed to be investigating the case.

“We do not know what really transpired hence investigations on the matter are ongoing. His friends said, together with others, the deceased went to the dam to take a bath but accidentally the deceased slipped into the water. After not seeing him for a while, his friends phoned the police for a rescue and the police discovered him in the dam,” Fane said.

He said the deceased, who was working as a nurse and stationed at Oodi Clinic, together his friends had visited the dam to entertain themselves when he meet the tragedy.

“Bokaa Dam is an area within reach, especially from Gaborone and neighbouring villages and people usually visit to chill with friends and have drinks, but coming close to water or trying to swim there is not allowed. Swimming under the influence of alcohol is risky. By doing so, someone will be putting their live at risk,” Fane said

He pleaded with members of the public to be cautious at all times when near the dam, especially that it is festive season and people would want to entertain themselves.

He said even though he did not have records or reports of people entertaining themselves at the dam, he cannot rule out any possibilities of people entertaining themselves there.

“This is first drowning incident I am aware of this year at the Bokaa dam but despite that I cannot rule out any possibilities of people entertaining themselves there and going to an extent of swimming,” he said.

The police boss encouraged members of the public to entertain themselves in a good and safe way without putting their lives at risk especially trying to swim under the influence of alcohol.

“Water can be dangerous especially not knowing how deep it is and at times not even knowing how to swim. Water can be powerful especially when it is windy,” he warned.

Recently a 33-year-old employee of Debswana Mine in Orapa also drowned in a swimming pool at the Thakadu Hotel at Letlhakane. Like in this incident, the engineer also met his untimely death while swimming with his friends while they were entertaining themselves in the afternoon.

lting in injury to the victim,” said Nyamadzabo.
