One life lost along Lobatse road

Ramotswa police station commander, Superintendent Keoagile Tau said a 35-year-old man who was a passenger in sedan car lost his life on the spot when their car collided with a combi.

He said the crash occurred at Seopasengwe lands along Lobatse/Gaborone road on Saturday around 4am. “We do not know what really caused the accident, but it looks like the two cars (the sedan and the combi) collided and both vehicles sustained heavy damage,” Tau said.

He said the combi had seven passengers whilst the sedan carried five.

Tau stated that other sedan passengers sustained injuries with one of them still hospitalised with serious injuries at Princess Marina Hospital. “The combi was not a public transport and luckily its seven passengers escaped with minor injuries,” Tau said.

Meanwhile, Tau complained of a recent spike in assault common cases in his policing area.

He said that this past weekend alone, he has recorded eight cases of assault common. He said that most of the fights occur at home, at bars and other entertainment areas and mostly perpetrated by people under the influence of alcohol. “Usually the people who get into misunderstandings and end up fighting are relatives, those in a relationship and people at the bars. We are concerned because these fights fuel Gender Based Violence (GBV),” Tau said.

He stated following in their efforts to curb GBV, they try by all means to involve social workers to meditate and provide them (both the suspect and complainant) with counselling before they could proceed with the case to court.

“The idea is to educate and sensitise both parties about GBV and how it can be stopped. We want everyone to know and understand things that can fuel GBV in their homes and how best they relate as partners and relatives,” Tau said.
