Two perish in a car inferno

Palapye deputy traffic officer, Inspector Ntshesane Rammapodi confirmed the accident to Mmegi in an interview saying the two died on the spot.

“The cars involved were a VW and a Mazda 3 which collided and caught fire. The VW was from the south while the Mazda 3 was from the north.

Unfortunately, both of the passengers in the Mazda 3, which was engulfed by fire died on the spot. It was difficult to rescue them.

Four of the VW passengers including the driver suffered major injuries and have been admitted at both the Mahalapye and Nyangabgwe hospitals respectively,” Rammapodi said.

He said that the investigations are still at an early stage to establish the cause of the accident. He further urged people to be extra careful when driving at night due to poor visibility. Moreover, he cautioned, they should mind their speed especially during holidays as there was bound to be a lot of traffic.

Meanwhile, Rammapodi pleaded with Palapye residents to help them find a car whose number plate ends with BEL after it was involved in a hit and run.

“We are looking for the driver of the car with a plate number ending with BEL or if the residents see any car with a portion of its plate number missing to report immediately to the police,” he appealed.

He said the driver of the car on Monday hit two old women and did not stop.

The duo was walking along the road near new Palapye police when the perpetrator hit them from behind leaving them with serious injuries. They have been admitted to the Nyangabgwe Hospital but Rammapodi assured that their lives were not in danger.
