Early exit: Bondo was sent home on Thursday

Senai is the COSAFA referees committee vice chairperson and was part of the decision to expel Bondo from the on going tournament.

“Let me not comment about the matter until I return home. Remember, I was part of the committee that took the decision to send him home,” Senai said from South Africa yesterday.

Bondo was roundly criticised for his decision to ignore ‘clear’ penalty appeals from the Zimbabwean bench late on in the top of the table clash, which ended goalless. After the match, Zimbabwe lodged a protest and COSAFA referees’ committee took the stern decision to send Bondo home.

It has been a somehow awkward few months for Bondo, who was accused of head butting an Angolan player when he handled a friendly match against South Africa in March.

He was again criticised for the handling of the second leg play-off between Motlakase Power Dynamos and Uniao Flamengo Santos in Palapye in May, before he was sent back home from the COSAFA Cup last Thursday, only to be named Botswana’s best referee on Friday night.

Bondo has remained Botswana’s leading whistle man after handling countless high profile matches, including a debut Africa Cup of Nations appearance in Gabon this year.
