We send this sincere message of condolences and solidarity to Sir Ketumile Masire’s family, the Government and the people of Botswana during this moment of bereavement.

President Masire was a statesman of note in African and world politics. One of the illustrious founders of post-colonial Botswana, he will be remembered for leaving behind a solidly democratic country and a people confident of a promising future. On the international scene, Sir Ketumile mediated peace and stability in a number of African states. The people of Lesotho fondly remember his efforts in addressing the perennial scourge of instability in our perpetually troubled country. Our people experienced him as a humble but firm mediator who strove for a peaceful end to often tense situations.

Lt General Maaparankoe Mahao Peace and Justice Foundation and the Family of the late General Mahao also seize this opportunity to convey their sincere appreciation of solid support from the political leadership of Botswana and the people of Botswana in their struggle for accountability, justice, lasting peace and stability in Lesotho. When Lt General Mahao was callously murdered by rogue elements of the Lesotho Defence Force in June 2015, we counted on Botswana as a pillar of support in our own moment of grief.

We have no doubt that Botswana’s unshakeable commitment to the rule of law in our SADC region is one of the lasting legacies Sir Ketumile Masire leaves behind and will be eternally remembered for.

Tsela Tsoeu Sir Ketumile!
