Expelled BDP cllrs mull political future

Duncan Enga and Vepaune Moreti contested for leadership of the council, despite not having been endorsed by the BDP caucus.

Enga beat Reaboka Mbulawa who had been endorsed by the party caucus for the chairmanship, while Moreti won the deputy chairmanship for the Maun Administrative Authority (MAA), beating Nico Folae who had also been chosen by the caucus.

Following the elections, BDP central committee suspended the duo pending a disciplinary hearing. The hearing was held this week and the party leadership decided to expel the two men.

Contacted for comment, Enga said the duo would hold a press conference on their future.

“I have already decided on my political future. Wait for the press conference which we will hold soon,” he said on Tuesday.

Enga has been strongly linked with a move to the Botswana Movement for Democracy (BMD), a member of the Umbrella for Democratic Change bloc. He however dismissed the speculation although the BMD’s North West regional chairperson, Isa Phoi was present during the interview with Mmegi.

“Phoi is just here to give me moral support following the latest developments,” Enga said. Phoi nodded his ascent without commenting.

Moreti, who had been with the BDP for 20 years, echoed Enga’s sentiments that their future would be revealed at an upcoming press conference.

The BDP found Enga and Moreti guilty of “behaving in a grossly disorderly manner” that could taint the party as well as “defying the party caucus contrary to Article 32.3 of the BDP constitution”. Both man were given 14 days to appeal.

Meanwhile Botswana Congress Party (BCP) North West region chairperson, Goretetse Kekgonegile says the duo is free to join their party.

“They are very capable people. We will be honoured if they join the UDC,” he said.

The BCP, which formally joined the UDC early this year, has a strong presence in the North West.
