The joint, located at the end of the main Mmopane road after bus rank, is a huge place with a campsite, Setswana huts, a terrace bar, pool, outdoor showers and mansion that would in future be used as a guesthouse.

In an interview with the event promoter Tlotlo Letsomo from Hyped Promotion, he said that they came up with the concept after realising that the thought of being away from phones for even one minute was impossible for many people more especially after social media took the world by storm.

“We realised that with all the social media apps that need updating, the possibilities of missing an important call or an update on your football team, the idea of an event where there is a designated zone where cellphone use is prohibited seems impossible in this era. The No Cellphone Zone event that is scheduled to take place monthly starting on the first of July, is a daytime event targeted to a certain demography that wishes to get away from Gaborone but still wish to be close to the city,” he explained.

Letsomo said the No Cellphone Zone would only be at the mansion site, whilst the rest of the Gardens have no prohibition on cellphone use. He explained that this was because they basically wanted to create an atmosphere where their guests could feel free, knowing there is privacy, and environment where they could actually talk and hear each other, where they could put their pride aside and dance the night off. He therefore said they chose their slogan to be ‘Connect by Disconnecting’.

He said the funders said that the initiative was benchmarked from the experience they had after visiting the Eyadini Lounge in Umlazi South Africa and they decided to borrow it and bring it to the country so that Batswana could also experience it.

“Located in the heart of Mmopane, Sekaka Gardens is a few metres (200 metres) from the combi rank. The gardens are located on your left at the beginning of the gravel road. As your enter Sekaka Gardens, there is a lit drive way and huge space on your right.”

“As you drive closer, you are confronted by the best crafted Setswana huts and as you drive through those and the lovely orchard, the big baobab tree on your left, the greenery behind the bungalows is perfect for your secluded parking spot. Just when you think that was it, a mansion protrudes in front of you, enclosed within a beautiful greyish wall. Within the walls there is a terrace bar, a pool, benches on lovely short grass and more parking space,” he said.

Entrance fee is P70 and P150 for VIP.
