The chief instructor recently received the new grade in Germany where instructors, the Shihans capped him. Moruakgomo, who has a 42-year career practising martial arts, is the third Motswana to acquire a sixth dan black belt after two of his former students, Million Masumbika and Mpho Bakwadi, both renowned karatekas.

“I had to go through a one week training demonstrating different katas, interpreting the different techniques, which I was also being judged on. They also took a look at my previous records,” Moruakgomo said.

The upgrade means that Moruakgomo can be titled as a Shihan, a senior expert in the field, but he still prefers the title Sensei.

With his new grade, Moruakgomo noted that it shows that the local martial arts is developing, pointing out at recent karatekas’ achievements in international tournaments.

“I will continue sharing my experience with people of different age groups. I want to go around schools talking to young people about health, lifestyle. I need to be an example and share my life with the youth.”

Moruakgomo is a martial arts chief instructor who teaches karatekas of different age groups. He started competing in 1985 in a tournament in America, then went on to acquire his first black belt in 1987. The maximum black belt rating one can attain is the 10th dan.
