MP Davids Murdered

In an interview with The Monitor, Letlhakeng police station commander Daniel Katse confirmed Davids’ death.

“Yes the allegations are true. We are investigating the MP’s death. I can’t at this moment disclose any details into the matter because investigations are still at initial stage,” Katse said. He stated that the incident occurred yesterday (Sunday) between 11am and 12pm at Sorilatholo cattle post.

The Monitor has learnt that Davids was stabbed to death with a sharp object, following a fight between him and two of his herd-boys. The suspects, a 31-year-old Zimbabwean national from Plumtree, and a 32-year-old Motswana from Ramotswa are currently in police custody. “We do not know what really transpired and investigations on the matter are ongoing.

But the allegation that the MP for Mochudi East, Davids has been stabbed to death is true,” Katse added. 

Davids, who went to Parliament on an Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) ticket in 2014, decamped to the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) last year.

The vocal, and at times controversial MP, was making a return to Parliament after 10 years absence. He first went to Parliament in 1999, then representing Botswana Democratic Party (BDP).

But Davids lost the seat in 2004, now on a BDP ticket, to his nemesis Isaac Mabiletsa, who had returned from the Botswana Congress Party (BCP) to rejoin the Botswana National Front (BNF).

In the last elections, having returned to BNF, as part of the UDC coalition, Davids beat amongst others Mabiletsa who, once again was on a BCP ticket. 

Last year before heading back to the BDP, Davids’ then comrades in both the UDC and BNF critisised him of accompanying President Ian Khama on a State visit to Sweden, where on return the government announced the purchase of fighter jets. The opposition stood firm against the announcement.
