Mogoditshane police station commander, superintendent Agreement Mapeu confirmed that Masisi escaped uninjured early Sunday morning. His official Prado was involved in a car accident when a Corolla hit it from the back. Mapeu said the accident occurred at 12 mid-night between Kopong and Metsimotlhabe.

Over the weekend the Moshupa/Manyana constituency held its congress in which members were electing delegates for the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) national congress in Tonota next month. It is believed Masisi might have been from that event when he met the accident. Mapeu stated that the 34-year-old man of Letlhakeng village knocked Masisi’s car from the back leaving a dent on the VP’s car bumper stating that both cars have minor damages.

“Masisi and his driver together with the man who hit them at the back all escaped uninjured. It was a minor accident, but after doing investigations we charged the 34-year-old man with a careless driving offence because he was driving under the influence of alcohol. We tested him and he was over the prescribed limit,” Mapeu said.

Mapeu said investigations in the matter are ongoing and the driver will appear in court as soon as they have concluded their investigations. “We are yet to send his car for inspection to find out if his car was road worthy and that is when he can appear in court,” Mapeu said.

In February a Botswana Defence Force (BDF) aircraft that killed three soldiers on board was scheduled to transport Masisi to an event in Tsabong. The aircraft that left Thebephatshwa Air Base for Gaborone to pick him up crashed in the general area shortly after taking off resulting in three fatalities.

Mapeu said they are also investigating another case in which a pedestrian, Zimbabwean woman aged 51-year-old ,was knocked and killed by a car near Bokamoso Private Hospital on Saturday. Mapeu said the woman, who was by the bus stop waiting to cross the road into Mmopane, was hit by a car and died on the spot.

He said it appears that the driver was over speeding and failed to stop the car. “The driver said he was trying to avoid hitting the back of another car and crossed his line to the bus stop and ended up hitting the woman who was waiting by the bus stop.” Mapeu stated that the woman who is married to a Motswana, was waiting to cross the road after getting off the bus when the accident happened.

Mapeu pleaded with drivers to obey the road signs and to drive within speed limits at all times.  He also called on drivers to be cautious of pedestrians at all times and give them a chance to cross the road especially where there are no pedestrian crossings.
