It is another setback for Katse who suffered a defeat on May 13 during a by-election against Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) candidate, Kenneth Segokgo.

The elections for South East regional committee were held on Sunday at Bakgatle Junior Secondary School.

The region covers Ramotswa, Tlokweng, Mochudi West and East constituencies.  Mochotlhi is an additional member of BDP National Youth Executive Committee (NYEC).

Katse got 40 votes, Mochotlhi 66. Odirile Motlhale was unopposed for the position of chairperson, with Shimane Senwelo elected treasurer at 42 votes, beating Motlatsi Mooketsi and Rondo Batlang who garnered 27 and 38 votes respectively. For the position of vice chairperson, Rosemary Pilane got 52 votes against Ronald Molokwe’s 51. The vice secretary is Daniel Molokwe who garnered 61 votes beating Raymond Makwatse who managed only 41. Rinso Batlang was unopposed for deputy treasurer.

“The aim of the new committee is to revive party structures and to make party visible in the four constituencies. Our concern is that our party has not been doing well in the four constituencies especially that the councils in these areas are controlled by the opposition parties. We want to recruit opposition members and people to join our party,” Mochotlhi said.

He said the newly elected committee would also preach peace amongst party members in their region. “We have realised that sometimes our party loses elections because our members are divided. Our aim is to preach peace and unite members,” he said.

The delegates who were chosen over the weekend will vote at the BDP congress in Tonota and Mokgweetsi Masisi team won majority of the seats. Masisi will be contesting against Nonofo Molefhi for the position of party chairperson.
