Womens softball team qualifies for World Championships

The women’s team has been out of action for a while now, but roared back to qualify for the global tournament, together with neighbour, South Africa.

The qualifiers were held in Pretoria over the weekend where four countries participated.

The team last competed at the World Championship in 2014. Team manager, Same Molete said qualifying for the championships is a huge achievement.

“We did not have enough time to prepare due to the festive break, but players were fit due to gym sessions,” she said.

The qualifiers were played in a triple fixture round-robin competition.  Botswana lost their first match 9-5 to South Africa, but came back to beat the host 5-0.

Molete said they had adjusted after the first match. She said they made fielding errors, especially that the South African pitcher was slower.

She said in the end they beat South Africa 15-1.

Botswana National Olympic Committee (BNOC) chief executive officer, Tuelo Serufho said in a press conference that his organisation supported the team in its preparations for the qualifiers.

He said they hope the team works hard and qualifies for Tokyo 2020.  He said no Botswana softball team ever qualified for the Olympics.
