Tafa the Marxist dies

Tafa is a life-long activist, leader and ideological mastermind of the Botswana National Front (BNF).
He dies while being the political education secretary for the party. He was voted for the position at the Francistown party congress in 2016.
Tafa served the BNF in this portfolio for years, as it was his passion, which he believed in.
Last year, after he won the elections, he promised party members that he will tour the country to revive political education in the party.
Mmegi has learnt that Tafa has not been well for some months.
“It is with great sadness to announce the death of Cde Elmon Mfanyana Tafa (AKA Cde Moore). Dr Tafa is a life-long activist, leader and ideological mastermind of the BNF.
“He is a well known writer and public educator who has been espousing a socialist vision of a Botswana where the wealth of the country is distributed equitably to all.
“At the time of his untimely death Dr Tafa was a political science lecturer at the University of Botswana,” the BNF vice president, Prince Dibeela said in a statement.
The outspoken Tafa was in 2008 together with the Botswana Movement for Democracy chairman Nehemiah Modubule, amongst others, expelled from the BNF.
By then they were known within the party as the Temporary Platform.
They were expelled for criticising the former BNF president Otsweletse Moupo’s leadership in public. They then reconciled with their party in 2011.
