Two die in road mishap

Thamaga police station commander, superintendent Moses Makgoeng confirmed the incident that occurred last Thursday.

“The accident took place in the morning at 7:40am. We do not have concrete evidence but it appears that the Nissan Primera that was coming from the Kanye side heading towards Gaborone was trying to overtake and ended up colliding with the Madza 3 that was coming from the Gaborone side,” Makgoeng said.

Makgoeng said the Madza 3 had three people on board, two passengers and the driver and the Nissan Primera had four people, three passengers and the driver.

“One passenger from the Madza 3, a Motswana woman aged between 35-40-years-old sustained serious injuries and she was certified dead on arrival at the Thamaga Primary Hospital. The other passenger from a Nissan Primera, a Zimbabwean man aged between 30-35-years-old was admitted at the same hospital with serious injuries and died shortly after,” Makgoeng said.

He said five survivors sustained serious injuries with some having fractures and were later referred to the Princess Marina Hospital where they are currently hospitalised. He said that the names of the deceased are still withheld until their next of kin have been notified. Makgoeng stated that there has been a lull in road accidents in his jurisdiction for months. He hoped the two  fatalities were not the ominious of more  accidents.

He said they are trying all they can to caution people about the dangers of reckless driving on the roads, but it seems like their message is falling on deaf ears.

“We are worried that despite our countless efforts, we continue to lose lives on the road. This is worrisome,” Makgoeng said.

He said they have observed excessive speed, hence pleading with drivers to obey the road signs and to drive at reasonable speed.

“The accident took place at a spot where the speed limit is 60km per hour. It is clear that the car that was overtaking was driving at a high speed. If the driver could have obeyed the road signs, the accident could have been avoided,” Makgoeng alleged.

He called on motorists to exercise caution when driving along the A10 because it is a busy road used by people who commute from places like Kanye, Moshupa, Thamaga, Kumakwane and Mankgodi, amongst others, to work daily in Gaborone hence having traffic especially in the morning and late afternoon.
