Shining stars: The women's team qualified for this year's World Championships

The team qualified for the Women’s Softball World Championship that will be held in Chiba, Japan in August, following last weekend’s qualifiers in Pretoria, South Africa.

Same Molete, the team’s manager, said that their defence (fielding techniques) is below par and needs to be strengthened.

Molete, who was happy about the team’s overall performance, stated that the team’s pitching at the tournament was satisfactory. She said they had no problem with the team’s batting techniques adding that they see no need to add more batters to the squad. “As a contingency measure, the team will make an addition of up to three players aimed at improving its defence. The players will be randomly selected based on their performances during the BofiNet softball league,” she said.

Molete added that in March, the squad would be reduced to 17 players who will make the final team that will participate in Japan.  The team travelled to South Africa with 23 players.

“The game we lost to South Africa allowed us to detect areas that required improvement. Although we are the champions, we did realise our weaknesses,”  Molete said. Botswana finished first ahead of three other countries; hosts South Africa, Lesotho and Zimbabwe. South Africa is the other African country through to the World Championship.
