D-Day for public markets

Last June, GCC notified all tenants of public markets to vacate the premises by end of January this year.

This followed a full council meeting at which a plan to partner with private companies to develop its public markets was revealed.

Civic leaders had complained that some tenants were no longer using the public markets per their lease agreement.

“It is true we are having consultation meeting tomorrow. We might close the ones that those who had rented them out to other people and those who are defaulting to pay us. We had long notified our tenants about our intention. The out come of tomorrow’s meeting will make GCC officers to act on the matter,” GCC mayor Kagiso Thutlwe said.

The public markets are at G-west, Bus rank, Newstance, Old Naledi, African mall, Ginger and BBS mall.
