BPP secretary general, Venter Galetshabiwe made such assurances after he addressed a UDC rally in Francistown. It was the first time in more than a year that a BPP member linked to a faction led by its president Motlatsi Molapise made a public appearance at a UDC activity.

It has often been speculated that Molapise is trying to influence BPP members to join the Alliance for Progressives.

“We boycotted the UDC activities because we wanted our grievances to be dealt with. However, our continued absence from the UDC has created an impression that we want out of the UDC. We will raise our concerns internally instead of boycotting meetings in order to kill the perception that we want to ditch the UDC,” Galetshabiwe said.

He added: “We fully participated in an executive committee meeting convened by the UDC in December last year. We will attend the next leadership meeting later this month. We are very committed to the UDC.”

One of the major reasons the BPP has cited for not attending UDC meetings is that the Botswana Congress Party (BCP) was not welcomed properly into the opposition coalition.

It remains to be seen if the BPP will maintain its promises. The party’s position within the UDC has often been contradictory.
