Choppies robbery suspect still in SA police custody

Legae was arrested on Sunday in South Africa’s North West province after escaping local law enforcement in an intensive manhunt for two weeks. He faces life in prison for a series of armed robbery, rape and shooting cases.
“Together with South African police, we are currently processing the extradition documents for Legae and are hopeful that very soon he will be extradited,” Botswana Police Service’s spokesperson, assistant commissioner Witness Bosija told Mmegi yesterday.
Bosija stated that the extradition process depends on “issues on the ground for his criminal charges” and there are hopes that he will be sent across the border soon.
Legae (23) of Kanye village together with his alleged partner Mogomotsi Thupane (34) of Moshupa are linked to a recent strings of armed robberies in Gaborone and the surrounding areas. The duo is suspected of rapes, armed robberies and shootings committed whilst on bail for other offences. Whilst on bail Legae had five cases of rape and robbery while Thupane had 11 armed robbery cases pending before court, prior to allegedly robbing Choppies Superstore in Block 8 at gunpoint and walking away with P112,000 and R13,000.
The two were also suspects in an armed robbery at Saverite supermarket in Moshupa that occurred between May 3 and June 1 where they walked away with an undisclosed amount of money. Following Thupane’s arrest earlier this month in Gaborone West, P38,000 and a vehicle suspected to have been used by the suspects was recovered.
Recently, the police arrested six other suspects thought to be behind a spate of armed robberies in and around Gaborone. The link between the suspects and Legae is presently unclear. Three firearms and large quantity of drugs suspected to be dagga were retrieved during their arrest. The six suspects appeared before the Lobatse Magistrates Court last Thursday.
