JCE 2017 results show slight improvement

According to a statement released by BEC, overall performance indicates that 33.80% of candidates have been awarded Grade C or better compared to 32.54% in 2016, which represents an increase of 1.26 percent.

This year only two candidates obtained Merit. “(There are) 376 out of 40,896 (0.92%) candidates awarded Grade A (for 2017) compared to 271 out of 41,464 in 2016, which translates to an increase in the percentage of candidates awarded Grade A (0.27%). There is 3,875 B (passes) (9.48%) compared to 3,465 (8.36%) in 2016, which is also an increase of (1.12 percent). This year Grade C slightly went down by 0.13% with 9,568 (23.40%) candidates compared to 9,757 (23.53%) in 2016,” it noted. The statement highlights that the proportion of candidates at Grade D decreased by 0.78% from 15.02% in 2016 to 14.24% in 2017. 

Furthermore, there is a decrease of 0.39% in candidates who failed to obtain an overall qualification, 6,851 (16.75%) compared to 7,105 (17.14%) in 2016. These are the candidates who did not meet the minimum requirement for a grade E and in the report are recorded under Grade U. Looking at the top 10 schools for 2017 JCE results, most schools had worked hard and their grades speak on their behalf. For the 2017 results Orapa Junior Secondary School (JSS) has come out victorious as they scooped first position with 77.1% pass rate compared to Nanogang JSS that scooped the same position in the 2016 JCE results with 72.1%. In the 2016 JCE results Orapa JSS scooped position two with 68.6%. For 2017 JCE results, Nanogang JSS has fallen to the fourth position where it got 72.8%. Surprisingly, Moepong JSS that was not even in the top 10 best performing schools last year scooped second position with 75.8% pass rate.

Bonnington JSS that was in position five in 2016 with 62.8% pass rate skated through with 74.1% to position three in 2017 moving two positions up. Kgosi Mpe JSS that scooped position nine with 57.6% has in the 2017 JCE results scooped position seven with 66.7%. Unfortunately, Sir Seretse Khama JSS, which was in position four with 63.2% in 2016 did not make the cut for Top 10 best performing schools this time around. Along with Sir Seretse Khama, Moselewapula (62% position six in 2016), Kgale Hill (61.1% position seven in 2016) and Maoka (57.5% position 10 in 2016) did not make it to the top 10 of the 2017 JCE results.

zSchools making the top 10 this time around are Meepong JSS that scooped position two, Mogobane JSS which got position five with 70.3%, Tlogatloga JSS in position six with 70.1% and Phatsimo JSS in position 10 with 64.2%. Of the Top 10 best performing JCE schools of 2017, the Central region took four positions with the South East region getting three, the Southern region having two  spots and the North East region landing one position on the list.
