South African football publication KickOff confirmed the club’s interest in April with the player’s manager Abel ‘Chaklas’ Shongwe telling the publication that negotiations have been concluded and Matete would be joining Rollers in the off season.

Popa’s interim coach, Mogomotsi ‘Teenage’ Mpote refuted the reports at the time but admitted that there was earlier interest in the player. However, on Friday the club announced the nimble footed player’s arrival at the Popa camp on their official Facebook page with a picture of Matete with club president Jagdish Shah.

“We have successfully completed the signing of Tsepo Matete from Baroka FC (South Africa),” confirmed the club.  The 25-year-old rose to fame when his videos hit over 700,000 views on YouTube, sparking interest from host of PSL clubs including Orlando Pirates before signing for Baroka FC.

He managed only 87 minutes of football last season with four appearances. Skhwama has made eleven league appearances, with five coming from the bench while scoring a single goal in one and half years he spent with the Limpopo based side.

The YouTube sensation has not lived up to the demands of the modern football hence he found himself club less after being released by Baroka in January.

He takes a trip to the north as he looks to revive his career at Popa. Skhwama will be third South African to don the famous blue and gold colours in 10 years after Papi Mokoena and Manqoba ‘Shakes’ Ngwenya who signed for the 14th time league champions in 2006 and 2013 respectively.

Meanwhile Popa are said to have completed the signing of Jwaneng Galaxy full back, Thabo Leinanyane on a three-year deal.

The Blues have been in hot pursuit of the attacking right back who had a splendid season with Mascom Top 8 champions. Leinanyane’s performances have not gone unnoticed as he was received his first Zebras call up on Thursday ahead of the COSAFA Cup.
