BPL, La Liga Enter Into Agreement

The Botswana Premier League (BPL) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with La Liga with the latter providing expertise as the BPL attempts to turn professional. Motlogelwa said La Liga is a well known institution and that the agreement is not only a milestone for Botswana but the entire region.

“La Liga and our league are miles apart and we stand to benefit a lot from this agreement because we will learn a lot from them. They have been in the game longer than us and have done extremely well,” he said. He said it is imperative that Botswana is open to learning and that a great opportunity like this one cannot be missed.

“They have agreed to assist us in trying to turn this league into a professional set up,” he said. La Liga representative, Antonio Barradas who is based in South Africa said the agreement is a win-win situation for both parties. He said although they are not looking for anything financial from the agreement, their benefit will be that they would be part of the local league’s growth.

“We want to be with people no matter how small their population is. We want to share with the rest of the world what we are doing in La Liga,” he said. He said their league has grown tremendously as evidenced by the fact that for the past 10 years, the award for the best player in the world went to La Liga.

He said they are in the process of launching a Pass the ball project in Johannesburg and expect Botswana to be part of it. He said the project seeks to bring highly qualified trainers to drill school kids. He said they expect Botswana to send someone to Spain to see how things are done as part of the agreement with the BPL.
