The Okavango constituency will be one to watch in 2019, when the former ambassador takes on Arone, the incumbent who defected from the same party Kapinga is now in.   On Friday Kapinga and Arone will be part of the Botswana Sectors of Educators Trade Union (BOSETU) panel discussion at Shakawe Junior Secondary School.

Kapinga, a former police deputy commissioner and Arone, a former Moral Education teacher, will be part of a discussion under the theme: ‘Hours of Work for Quality Education, Save the Beloved Country’.

Other speakers include the North West regional education office, BOSETU and leaders within the Okavango region. BOSETU publicity secretary, Edwin Maitshoko said the panel discussion is a precursor to the open day they will host on Saturday.

Maitshoko hinted that they chose the two speakers given their public status in the Okavango district. “We are hoping the two leaders will use the occasion to reflect on the education problems affecting the district,” he said.

Maitshoko said the panel discussion will be aired live on Duma FM as will other activities during the open day ceremony on Saturday. Arone will, however, first have to see off competition in the primaries against power house Mbaha Kambimba.

Arone made a surprise jump a year ago from the Botswana Congress Party (BCP) to join the ruling Botswana Democratic Party.  His departure sparked intense hostility within opposition politics with many likening it to sabotage.

In November, however, the wounded BCP announced Kapinga as a surprise addition to their ranks, immediately touting him as a rival to Arone.
