Gopolang told Mmegi on Tuesday that he will throw his hat in the ring once the BDP sanctions aspiring candidates to express interest to contest in the next round of the primary elections that are popularly known as Bulela Ditswe in the vernacular.

All BDP candidates - council and parliamentary - are expected to formally express their interest in May.

Gopolang said: “It is now an open secret that I have developed interest to contest in the upcoming BDP parliamentary primary elections in Francistown West.  I will formally reveal my intention once the party has sanctioned us to openly state our interests”.

Asked why he has now developed interest to contest during the primaries, Gopolang said: “As a leader, you have to develop, you can’t stay in one position forever.  I have interest to represent my party at another level”.

Gopolang, however, shared that his decision to represent the BDP at a high level would depend on what BDP diehards will say about his newfound ambition.

He added: “I will have to do thorough research in the constituency to gauge the response of people towards my candidature”.

The BDP primary elections in the constituency promise to produce fireworks.  It is a well-known fact that the current MP for the area, Ignatius Moswaane will defend his seat.

Others who have shown interest in the parliamentary post for the area are Raoboy Mpuang, Gregory Kealotswe and Tebogo Toteng.

Already, some of the aspirant MPs are jostling for the attention of voters and have aligned themselves with potential council candidates in a bid to win the primaries.
