Sources in South Africa told Mmegi Sport yesterday that despite speculation in the media, Stars had not appointed a coach. “There is nothing finalised. He could be among the candidates, quite a lot of them, but nothing further than that.

At this stage, that is as far as it is, contrary to reports,” a highly placed source said. Efforts to get a comment from Platinum Stars were futile at press time as the club general manager, Senzo Mazingisa’s phone rang unanswered.

South African football publication, Kick-Off had reported yesterday that Butler had agreed a deal with the ABSA Premiership side, which uses the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace in Rustenburg, North West as its home ground.

Butler is familiar to the South African fans, particularly those in the North West after the Zebras defeated Bafana Bafana through penalties in the quarter finals of the COSAFA Cup in 2015.

Butler has been the centre of attraction since his weekend outbursts directed at his employers, the Botswana Football Association (BFA).  The coach said some people within the association were pulling in opposite direction to sabotage the national team.

The two parties were expected to hold a clear-the-air meeting yesterday after Butler accused the BFA of failing to lend adequate support to the national side. Butler’s brief three month contract expires at the end of the month, and a new long term deal has not been finalised.
