Two lose lives in separate road mishaps

Borakanelo police station commander, Superintendent Mothusi Phadi said in one incident, a combi and a Subaru collided at the Kandu traffic lights, which were not working, leaving one dead.
“Surprisingly, the accident occurred at round 8am when the road was clear. Expectation is that even if the traffic lights were not working, drivers should have waited because there is a stop line, which is a regulatory sign that forces drivers to stop when approaching the traffic lights,” Phadi said. Phadi said during the process the combi that was carrying 14 people overturned and left one dead and a majority of the passengers badly injured.
The deceased was a 25-year-old woman (passenger), who was confirmed dead on arrival at Princess Marina Referral Hospital.
“A majority of combi passengers are currently hospitalised at Bokamoso and Gaborone Private hospitals with serious injuries, with a few to having been treated and released from hospital with minor injuries,” Phadi said.
He said that even though investigations on the matter are still ongoing it looks like both drivers failed to stop by the traffic lights and headed straight into the collision.
“It looks like both drivers were speeding because if not, they would have avoided the accident by stopping when approaching the stop line,” Phadi said.
He said in another accident, a woman aged 18, who was a pedestrian was knocked off by a truck near Riverwalk Mall on June 8, 2017 and lost her life on the spot while trying to cross the road.
“The accident occurred during the day at around 1:40pm and investigations on the matter are (also) ongoing,” Phadi said.
He pleaded with drivers to appreciate that pedestrians are equal road users.
Meanwhile, Phadi expressed concern with the increase in pickpocketing and theft from cars in shopping malls in their policing area, where women are the main target.
