Speaking during his farewell to the community of Palapye at the village main Kgotla on Friday morning, the outgoing President said he would support the country’s stance on capital punishment beyond his tenure.

He said murderers would only stop killing people when they know they are destined to the hangman’s noose. He said without capital punishment innocent people would die like flies just like in some states of the world that shun the law.

He said the government would continue to turn a deaf ear to the efforts of human rights groups that value the lives of the murderers. He made it clear that there would be no room in this country for murderers.

“We want to save the lives of our people and we cannot live in a country with others who choose to kill our innocent people,” he said.

“The government cannot afford to keep murderers in jail like other groups that protect the rights of people want us to. The government cannot take care of murderers and feed them for over 50 years for killing innocent people. Everyone who claims a life of an innocent individual will also be killed.”

Khama announced that he is not lost to Batswana and particularly to Bangwato. He said after he concludes his tenure as the President of the country he will be coming back to claim his position as the chief of Bangwato.

“I am a chief of Bangwato, and I am not going anywhere as Kgosi. When I am done with the presidency, I will be coming back to the Palapye kgotla as the Kgosi of Bangwato.”

The community of Palapye gave the President a gift of a ranch fencing materials worth P253, 981.65, four cows, four goats, two horses, three chickens, a bicycle and P30,000 cash.

The Botswana Power Corporation donated an electrified bicycle, while Botswana International University of Science and Technology donated P25,000 cash.
