Rampant drug use worries UB

“We make arrests on a regular basis of students in possession of drugs. We also try to disperse students when we see them gathering. Some come in cars and take the drugs at playing grounds and run away when they see us approaching,” he said.
Frank said they usually hand the cases to the police and try by all means to find out who is the source. He said most cases involve small packs of dagga.
On Boots being invited, to the institution, Frank said the police declined. “We requested them to bring the sniffer dogs to the institution in a meeting we had.
They, however, advised that it would not be a good idea, as it would give the institution a bad name in case many students are arrested. We agreed that we would stick to patrols and come up with other interventions,” he said.
Man of the moment, Assistant commissioner, Nunu Lesetedi, who heads the Crime Investigation Division (CID) said they were aware of the drug use prevalence at the UB and other institutions.
“We are aware of these, and have made some arrests before. Our aim is not to see the students out of school and we usually engage parents and other stakeholders to try mould the young people. We have, however, warned them that if they continue we will have to take stringent measures and they will find themselves out of school,” he said.
Lesetedi said they intend to take sniffer dogs with them to some of the institutions they have identified to be hotspots.
He said they are at times challenged by lack of resources, but promised they would be raiding institutions including UB, Botswana University of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Botswana Accountancy College and Botho University.
