Security Guard Pleads Guilty To Stealing Orange Money

Thirty-five-year-old Odigetse Tiro of Block 1 committed the offences between August 1 and October 18, 2014 at the Orange Botswana shop situated at Nzano Mall.

Tiro is charged together with his girlfriend who was not before court because she is currently in confinement. The total money that Tiro admitted to have stolen using the Orange Money transfer service is P22,250. The accused told the court that he will engage an attorney to represent him in the matter. State prosecutor, Gasemotho Pitlagano from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions told the court that he did not object to the accused being given conditional bail because investigations into the matter are complete. Pitlagano also told the court that he did not anticipate that Tiro will plead guilty to the charge therefore he was applying for another date of mention to be set so that he can have an opportunity to prepare the facts of the case.

Asked if he had anything to say in relation with what the prosecution told the court, Tiro asked for forgiveness from the court adding that he wants to pay Orange Botswana all the money that he stole.

However, Magistrate Ishmael Molobe told Tiro to reserve what he had just told the court for mitigation after the facts of the matter are read to him.

According to sources close to the matter, Tiro came into possession of the money after some employees of Orange Botswana gave him the code of how to transfer money using Orange Money.

Some employees of Orange Botswana allegedly gave him the code to help customers during busy days when they were having staff shortages.

After he was given the code, sources said, he illegally transferred the money to his girlfriend. His shenanigans were discovered after Orange Botswana carried out an audit. Tiro, who is out on bail, is due for facts reading on June 23.
