The league that started in May and continued on Saturday in Gaborone has four clubs in the men and women’s competition, being Botho University, University of Botswana (UB), Matsubutsubu and Acres.

“When we launched the league, we came up with a rule that will encourage women to take part and we highly participate. We made a rule that allows a club to register a minimum of five women, and that the club will not be registered if it did not meet this requirement,” Mosikare said.

He said all of their registered teams have representation from both men and women. Mosikare said if the club fails to include women their opponents take soft points. “The clubs that we have they have done a tremendous job in recruiting women because when we started we had a few of them, but nowadays they have been slowly coming for the games,” he said.

He further said women seem to be enjoying the game and have support of their counterparts. Mosikare added he is happy with the way men have supported women in the sport. The weekend action saw Matsubutsubu win 20-5 against UB in the women’s league, while their male counterparts were also 17-8 victorious over their UB counterparts. The league continues this weekend where Botho will take on Acres. Meanwhile, Botswana has been invited to the All Africa Games to be held in Zimbabwe in August.

“We have been invited but, we are still looking for sponsors to help us to participate in the competition. The performance of our players has been outstanding ever since we began the league. Therefore, to participate in international events will motivate them to aim higher,” he said. Mosikare said their target is to attract more teams next season therefore they will continue to market pool as there is space for clubs to register. In other developments, BBC is in negotiations with the Botswana National Sport Commission so that they could be allocated a hall that will have pool tables to be able to accommodate all pool games.
